Lagos State government yesterday sealed about 130 buildings at Lake View Park and Lekki County Homes Estate in Lekki area for contravening the law regulating building construction.
It was learnt that the buildings, both competed and under construction, were sealed for flagrant violation of the building permit and approval while government officials in charge of the area were allegedly barred from entering the estates.
Other estates that will soon be sealed, according to the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), are Cartong Gate Estate, the South Pointer Estate, Ocean Bay Estate, Buena Vista Estate, South Gate Phases 1 & 2 Estate, Victoria, Guest Estate, Lekki County Estate, Prime Water Estate all in Eti-Osa Local Government.
The General Manager, LASBCA, Oladotun Lasoju, said that the estates were sealed over non-compliance with the building regulations. Lasoju said it was disheartening that the managements of the estates barred government officials from carrying out their lawful duties
The general manager added that on several occasions the LASBCA officials supervising buildings in the area were denied access to the estates. He said: “The estate residents are full of defiance.
They are in the habit of turning back public officials from carrying out their lawful duties. By this, we can’t do our work and our work is about safety.
These residents will be at the forefront crying wolf should there be any occurrence. But we are here today to inspect buildings under construction but they are not allowing us to do the inspection. We are coming again because this government has zero tolerance for building collapse and they should comply with building law in all its ramifications.”
